The history about the Lancashire Heeler

The Heeler is the smallest of the drover and herder dogs,-and their nickname is `a nip and duck dog`.It is 25-30 cm high and their weight are about 5-8 kg.This dog is a bit longer in it`s body, than it height. In Norway we have about 20 og this breed, and as far as I found out,3 litters have until now been born in Norway!

The heeler comes from the count Lancashire i northern England, where it since 1400 century has been kown as the farmers little helper. The dogs work on farms, herding cattle and sheep, they were used in the past to drive cattle to the slaughter houses. They have good hunting instincts, and have no problems hunting f.ex. rats and rabbits. It helps the fisherman to keep his catch of the day out of reach for the birds, and the dog is a good companion for horses. This breed is also known to be very true and loyal to its owner.

The Heeler is very `intelligent`,with a lot of words when it talks to its owner. That it is intelligent, must not be mistaken with no learning or upbringing of the dog.If you don`t do this, the dog will take action by `his own feet`.Then things turn out just how they will be...

The Heeler has a lot of humour, and it is common for the dog to smile and show all of his/hers teeth.

Because of this breed many sides and qualities,it is very popular among pensionaries who takes small walks,to teenagers who likes agility and other activities.

This breed is a mix between Welsh Corgi and Manchester Terriers (black and tan).Their coat are harsh and smooth, and they have undercoat wich keep them warm and dry through all kind of weather. In wintertime the dog may have a mane around it`s neck. The most common breed-colour,is black and tan,but also lever is approved by Kennel Clubs.

Alternative names of this breed,is Ormskirk Heeler and Ormskirk Terrier.
